Out of the Hospital

On Thursday night, the Eigners were released from the hospital and checked into the Ronald McDonald House. Later on Friday morning, they were back at the clinic, because Peter threw up in the morning and threw up again in the clinic waiting room. He wasn’t feeling very well. During a long day at the clinic meeting with a doctor and psychologist (because Peter’s often reclusive), they determined that he’s still going through withdrawals from the loads of various narcotics. He missed a couple doses of methadone — the pain/withdrawal narcotic — so they’re making sure he’s getting that now and things are better. It’s a very small dose, but it doesn’t take much for a 40-pound body. He’s also on an anti-nausea medication.

They did get out of the clinic in the evening with an understanding that it’s simply going to take a while. HIs body and mind are still very fatigued. The goal is to keep him out of the hospital, let each day’s activities build some strength, and only push his eating habits. Eating is still a big challenge. He’s wearing a backpack with fluids that go through his hickman to make sure he’s hydrated. Last night they made him a malt and he struggled through it. Then they went to a little shop where you can paint ceramics and he painted a dinosaur.

He had a good night and it’s a beautiful Saturday, so they might take a buggy ride around Central Park. His spirits are pretty good when the withdrawals are under control. Ty and Erika haven’t made any flight arrangements to come home. It’s a little to early to know when they might be able to leave, but late next week is the current guess. But they’re out of the hospital and that’s step one. Let’s hope that more food and less narcotics enter Peter’s body in the coming days.

  1. Good Morning Peter, I hope you are feeling better today. Mom said yesterday was a tough one but she did say that you rallied to make a very cool dinosaur plate.
I sure had alot of fun with your sisters last week. They make me laugh!! You will be surprised at how much Kate is talking. When I pick up my phone she always says “lemme talk to Pedar” She learned that from Ellie. Ellie really enjoys saying Hi to you. Your little voice lights up her face.
I am in the process of cleaning up my house. I have to pick up stuffed animals, rescue heros, crayons and all of the stuff the girls hauled out when they were here.
Uncle Tito had to take Buzz to the hospital last night. They thought he had to have his appentix taken out but after lots of blood test and exams they decided that it wasn’t that. He may have hurt his inside tummy by hitting the handle bars on his bike, or it might be a virus. He was very dehydrated also. Maybe he should get a back pack like you. I watched Cole. Quinn and Van while Melissa and Trent were gone. They are funny little boys, that’s for sure.
Well Bud have a great day. I love you lots. Gramma Mary

  2. Whooooo-Hooooooo! Out of the hospital!! YESSSSSSSSSS! That has got to be a spirit booster in-and-of itself! No offense to hospitals or doctors/nurses…. but, being away from that place has got to put a smile on your face and a giggle in your heart!! 🙂 Fresh air and fun activities with mom & dad will certainly help out with your moral! I bet your ceramic dinosaur ROCKS!! A buggy ride through central park sounds like an A-OK plan to me! Now that your feeling better, you should enjoy some of the awesome things to do in the big city!! Do you have an “I love NYC” t-shirt yet?? (or – maybe you don’t ‘love’ NYC!!??!)

We hope you can get some food down soon so you can board that airplane and head home!! Do your best, buddy! Maybe you could find some yummy food while your venturing through central park today!

We look forward to seeing you when you get back! Mommy said you won’t be able to start school immediately, so – if need be, you come to my house and we’ll have lots of fun, ok! Emily has a new game for her Leapster called “Creature Create”… and I think you would really like to play it! Plus, I will play hangman with you and read to you and color with you (even though you are a MUCH better artist than me!!).

We miss you and love you and are sooooo excited that you are out of the hospital! You are one heck of a kid, my friend!

    With lots of love~
Jenni, Ryan, Emily, Lily & Parker

P.S. We are taking the girls to the State Fair tomorrow — maybe I will buy you something special as a “Welcome back to MN” gift!! 🙂

  3. Wow, you guys are on the right track again. A buggy ride thru central park should be a ton of fun. My sisters and I did that in Salt Lake City when we met there for a conference. I felt sorry for the horse, he seemed like he was about a thousand years old (almost a dinosaur) at least, and he looked so worn out, it was the end of the day. We thought maybe we should have put him in the buggy and had the five of us pull him around. What do you think?

  4. Peter~

You are AMAZING!! You have come so far, from a few weeks ago. Your fight, strength, and attitude have taught us all so much. We are hoping for you to keep getting stronger, and eating tons more so you can come home soon. We are looking forward to visiting again with you. Thanks for checking in on Logan, we appreciate hearing from you guys! A buggy ride in the park sure sounds like fun, hope you got to do it. Always thinking and praying for you and your family!

  6. Way to go Peter…Out of the hospital! Now it is back to listening to mom and dad…I bet you can make them very happy by eating the best you can. Even Super Heros eat to stay strong. Can’t wait for the next big news…that you get to come home. I bet your kindergarten room will be cheering for the day when you get to join them at school. Keep up the good work and take a few pictures at Central Park.

  7. Great news to hear you are free from the hospital!! Keep getting stronger and eat lots of malts. Someday when you get as old as us and you are an adult, all those malts are a bad idea!! 🙂 So, enjoy them while you can. Praying for you everyday and thinking of you all.
    Love

  9. Peter…we’re so happy to hear you are out of the hospital and into the Ronald McDonald House. Sorry you aren’t feeling so good but I bet each day will get better. Hope you are able to get out in the fresh air…that will feel good after being in the hospital for so long. It’s easy to say keep trying to eat something, but when your tummy doesn’t feel so good it isn’t easy.
Hope you’re having a good day!!!!!!

  11. Hi Peter
I was so lucky last week, I got to see both your Grandma’s, Grandma Barb and Grandma Mary. They said they sure can not wait until you can home. That is what we all wish for, is for you to get well so that you can come back home to Minnesota and be with your family and all your friends. You have more friends than any one I know. I am sure that is because you are such a kind and sweet little boy.
I am so happy to hear you are at the Ronald McDonald house and not in the hospital. You need to get your strength back so you can fly on home. Maybe you need some spaghetti with big meatballs on it to get you big and strong again.
Take care Peter and tell your mom and dad Hi for me. I sure miss you all alot.
    Love and prayers.
    Jill S.

  12. We are soooooo…. happy to hear that you are out of the hospital. I hope you can see some of the sights in the big city. I know Dan and I sure had fun while we were there. I hope you can start to enjoy some fun. The pizza there is great!! I can hardly wait for you to be back home. We hope you feel better every day. Let’s get together to play soon. Keep eating and you will feel better. Thinking and praying for you often.
Love, LaCoe, Dan, Gavin and Lucas

  13. Boy oh boy, Peter; keep up the good work healing, clearing stuff out of your system. Take good care, Ty and Erika.

  14. Hi Pete….We are all so happy with the progress you are making….Keep up the good fight, buddy!!! I talked to Carl and we are going to wait to go fishing until you get better. The fishing trip would not be the same without you and your Dad (you will have to help your dad, because he can’t catch anything). We love you all……Can’t wait until you get home!! The “Z’s”

  15. Hi there it was so good to read that you are out of the hospital. I know every day you are getting stronger. It was good to see your grandma and sisters last week at our open house. Enjoy these nice days and keep up the good work. God Bless, Cheryl Bailey

  16. Dear Peter and family,

We think of you and your family every day and hope your appetite and energy are returning. It is so hard to eat when you really don’t feel like it. TPN helped this Peter regain strength and appetite until french fries and high fat yogurt fortified with dry milk helped tip the scales up. We know you can do it, you have done so very much. Enjoy being out of the hospital, eat up, and know that so very many people love you and support you from the tips of your toes to the top of your head.
Here is a silly joke for you:
How do you make a milkshake?
Creep up behind a cow and say BOO!

    Be Well,
    Peter Wolkoff and KTKelley

  17. Your family remains in my prayers constantly. Peter your strength is an inspiration to us all. Stay strong and enjoy the Lion King!

    God bless,

    Heather Groetsch and family
