Slow but steady

I told Ty I thought he did a great job of expressing our sentiments on his post yesterday and he said “the only thing I forgot was to tell everyone how he is doing today!!!” So this is going to be short and sweet but he’s doing pretty well. He is no longer paralyzed but is pretty heavily sedated still. They are really challenging him with the vent settings – trying to wean him while maintaining safe numbers (we see this as a positive since he hasn’t shown any signs of not wanting more challenge). While he MAY be ready to get off the vent in a week or so, we are getting the impression that his overall recovery will take quite some time. They are not ready to give any timelines yet as he is still in “critical condition”. So we are just trying to stay focused on this recovery (lungs) and will deal with further cancer treatment when the time comes. They are going to try to put a feeding tube in again today. They tried 5 times last week because it is much better to give him food directly into “the gut” than through IV, but it is very difficult to get it down and placed right. The most frustrating thing on a daily basis right now is Peter, when he does wake, is trying to talk to us. It’s hard to see him try because no words come out, and considering he has 2 tubes coming out of his mouth, it’s impossible to read his lips! So we encourage him to relax and we ask him a lot of questions to which he nods or shakes his head. Overall, we couldn’t be more happy about the direction he has gone over the last week.

  2. Dear Peter – I bet it’s really hard not being able to talk to your Mommy and Daddy!! Just listen to them – relax and get well. Than you can talk all you want when your lungs are all healed!

Ty and Erika – thank you both for taking the time to ‘chat’ with all of us. It’s nice to hear from some of the family! Don’t get me wrong, we await Uncle Matt’s news daily!!

We think of you constantly and pray for the speed to come to end this chapter so you can all be together again. I’ll bet Minneapolis never felt so close to home to you both!!

Love and prayers to you all –

  3. It sounds like things are moving in the right direction and I know it must be difficult to see Peter with all those tubes, but they will come out and he will talk and laugh again! Our prayers and thoughts continue to be with you. Stay strong . . . WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES TOO!

  4. We have been following your journey avidly throughout the past year, but have never posted a comment until now. As parents of three young girls (one who is Peter’s age) and having a nephew/godchild who also endured health challenges, our heartstrings are tugged at often as we read the entries about Peter and the obstacles you face.

We spent last week at a lake around the Brainard area with no internet access. We thought of Peter often; wondering how he is holding up, how your family is doing and realizing that it has been a year now that you have been fighting this fight. There is nothing we can say that hasn’t been said many times already, but just wanted you to know that another family is thinking and praying for you every day. You are truly amazing parents and we find your positive outlook to be an inspiration to all. May God continue to keep you strong.

  5. Hi Peter and Family,

We are so thrilled to hear of your progress. Keep going little guy…no doubts you can beat this ARD’S thing, Just like you are beating the Path thing.
We are watching David Beckam-The soccer star play in NYC. I know you like Hockey and baseball, but you have to watch David Beckham play, he’s awesome!! We were talking about you tonight and JohnLuke, (Macy’s neighbor) was wondering if you could come and play soccer in his back yard, when you get back home? I said you probably could, and knowing how good you are at sports like JohnLuke, you guys will keep each other busy for hours. So you keep breathing deep breaths, and we’ll keep praying for you and checking up on your progress and soon you can come to Aunt Michelle’s and Uncle Scottie’s, and play anything you want.
I ran for you today to keep training for the half marathon, I was tired because today was my last day of training for the week and I ran 36 miles for you in one week, it was hard, but what you are doing is harder and you seem to do it with such ease….You are amazing. You keep me running and I take deep breaths and say out loud when I run, “feel my breaths Peter, and take them and use them”….then I say my prayers for you and know God will take them to you.
You keep up the good work and save all your words for your mom and dad, then you can just babble away when the time is right. I know you can do it.
You all are always in our prayers!!!
    God Bless!!

  7. Nice note from Ty and Grandma yesterday. Unless you’ve been through this, I don’t think anyone can fully know how difficult the year has been for you… lots of hard decisions, so much to learn, and difficult being separated so much from the girls. It’s been wonderful having a way to communicate support for you…thanks again, Uncle Matt!

Happy to hear Peter is really moving forward…once that respirator is out you’ll all be rejoicing. I can’t wait to hear your lungs are healthy, Peter…you are one brave little guy and everyone is so proud of you.

  8. Peter~
Hi sweet boy! I can only imagine what it must be like to have all those tubes down your throat & nose! You are such a good boy for leaving them alone… it’s very important that they stay in place until you are all healthy and breathing well again. This is just one more thing that you do so much better than I ever would! I have a terrible gag reflex and I think I would have a hard time with all that stuff in my mouth! It must be frustrating when you can’t get any words out, huh? Your mommy & daddy are right though ~ just relax! (Easier said than done, I am sure!) One day soon, things will be “normal” again and then you can tell us all the stories and jokes you want! Speaking of jokes – I am actually sitting here eating a banana laffy-taffy. Wanna hear the jokes from the wrapper?? *Why did the skeleton cross the road? (answer) To get to the body shop! *What did one triangle say to the other triangle? (answer) Let’s get together and square dance! *Why was the policeman in bed? (answer) Because he was an undercover cop! *Why don’t lobsters share? (answer) Because they are ‘shellfish’!
Peter – we are so proud of your progress! You really have come a
L-O-N-G ways over the last week! We were all pretty frightened and worried about you (not that we still aren’t!) – but, wow! You are a fighter and when you want to win, you certainly know how to push through the obstacles!!! Keep it up, Pete-man! You are such a brave boy!

Thanks Ty & Erika for keeping us so informed! I know you two have so much on your minds right now – so we really do appreciate you taking the time to update us on Pete’s progress. We hope you both find time for youselves each day – and that you find yourselves smiling more and more each day! 🙂

~The Will of God will never take you to where the Grace of God will not protect you.~

Sweet dreams, Peter! Peace and a good night’s rest, Ty & Erika. We love you all and miss you all so very much!

With all our love and prayers for a great tomorrow~

I’ve always been scared to come on the website. always been afraid of what it would say. Always been of afraid of whatever info I would read.
I’m so glad I came on today.
I read that the date you found out about Peter was August 17, 2006. August 17th is my birthday.

Ty, I’m so proud of you and Erika for being so strong. The leadership you are showing all of us is heartpounding.

And Peter – Its unbelievable and unexplainable the strenth you have shown
over the past yr. your daddy gave me a little blue wrist band when we played in
MN against the wild this yr. He asked me to wear it in support of you and your
fight to beat this terrible disease. I’ve worn it everyday since, and people all over
the NHL ask about it. I tell them I wear it because there is this little boy from MN
who has as much fight in him then all of the NHL players combined.

Keep fighting “Big Guy” and then 10 yrs from now on Aug 17th we will both
celebrate by whipping your dad in a gm of golf at the old Forest Creason Golf
    Course in Bowling Green

  10. I am so glad to hear Peter is “moving in the right direction”. I am so blessed to be a part of this wonderful community of people who know you or know of your situation. May God continue to bless Peter and the rest of your family. Everywhere I go lately and over the past year people are talking about how Peter is doing and what an amazing family you have. I am so glad to know you and to continue to pray for Peter as well as the whole family. I can hardly wait for you to be coming home, until then know we are all here cheering you on. Keep Fighting, Peter. We’ll be here when you come home!! God bless and may we continue to see Miracles! We Believe….

  11. Ty and Erika,
Just wanted to let you know that we are still thinking and praying for Peter and your family everyday. Your strength and love is what gives Peter the power and courage to fight this battle!
And thanks to you and all of your family and friends that contribute to the website. We will continue to follow Peters progress and recovery.
    Our love and support,
    the Granato family

  12. Dear Eigner’s and extended family; we are very thankful for Peter’s progress and for your family’s constitution and fortitude.

  13. I haven’t checked in some time. We will add Peter to our prayers and ask for continued improvement. We were introduced to you through Molly. Kyle was diagnosed in February 2005. Please let us know if we can be of any assistance.
