ICU Update

This is Auntie Meeses. I am filling in briefly for Matt since he is out of town and currently without computer access and for Erika and Ty as well, since they aren’t allowed to use their phones or computers in the ICU. Here is an update from Erika as of this morning:

“He had a restful night. The nurse said he respnded during the night once by squeezing her fingers to say he is not in pain and he opened his eyes and turned his head when she said I was sleeping on the bed (couch!) Next to him. Then she asked him if he was scared and he opened his eyes wide with his stern brow that we all know, and shook his head no.
He responded to Ty and I a little this morning. He is pretty heavily sedated which is good for now. They will probably try to get him off the ventilator later today but wil still keep him here for a couple days before going back across the street to MSKCC.
We share a room with 2 other little patients and there are 2 nurses and a doctor in the room so the care is excellent.
He has the breathing tube in his mouth, feeding/stomach tube through his nose, the chest tube out the side of his body (for drainage) and the bladder tube…yoweeee!
I am certain this one is going to take a little more time to recover from. The tumor was fused onto the aorta and other arteries, so Dr. LaQuaglia said it took a lot of scraping, peeling, etc, 1 mm at a time. Not to mention all the things he had to move around just to get to that. And probably removed a lot of scar tissue as well.
I think that’s it for now. He’s doing as well as he can right now, and so are we!”

I just spoke to Erika again this afternoon and they have now removed his breathing tube and Peter is breathing on his own. As well, they stopped the pain meds for about an hour today in hopes that Peter would become more lucid. They’ve been using the “thumbs up or down (or in between)” system to ask him how his pain is. Twice now he’s given them a “thumbs down” so they’ve started him on some morphine again to make him more comfortable. He points at his stomach because it (no doubt) hurts and Erika and Ty know he isn’t feeling great but he is doing very well as far as the doctors are concerned. Another day or two is expected in the PICU unit.

Peter, Ty and Erika – We all send our thoughts, love, and hope to you guys in NYC. Hang tough.

  5. Hey there, sweet boy! You are so amazing, Peter…. you have endured so much in the last year of your life, it makes me get the “shiver-eez” everytime I read about how well you are handling things! I can attest to the fact that you handle pain well…. remember when you had your antibody treatment?? Mommy shared with all of us how incredible your pain was… worse than childbirth, etc. She had commented over and over again how horriffic it was to watch her little boy in so much pain…. but, wouldn’t ya know it…. when Peter returned to daycare following his antibody treatment, when I asked him how it went, he answered, “fine!”. When I commented on what a bummer it was that it hurt so bad, he looked at me with crazy wide eyes and diligently insisted that “it didn’t hurt at all!” I want just a teensy portion of your bravery, Peter!! Keep on fighting… keep your spirit alive….. and your will to win alive. Hopefully the path leading you to victory will straighten out again soon. Until then, rest well – and aim for as many thumbs-up as possible! 🙂
Ty & Erika~ whew… I raise my glass to the most amazing parents on earth. What you two have endured this past year – and more over, the past few days – is more than any parent should have to expereince in a lifetime. May you also rest well and find reasons to point your thumbs up, too! Better days are ahead…. Peter always clears the hurdles…. I for one believe he will gain strength sooner versus later.
Thinking of you and continuing to send prayers for guidance, strength, peace, serenity, healing, recovery… and lots of ‘thumbs-up’!! 🙂
Sleep tight, Peter! I LOVE YOU, my sweet one….
    Love, Jenni & family

  9. Pete:

Back on board after hearing about your recent experience. Just want you to know that we are thinking of you every day and have frequent talks with family members about Pete and your family. Claire had a needle in her hand this past week. She looked @ the black and blue marks and all she could think about is you. She brought it up more than once. She said, “When I look @ my hand, I think of Peter. Then I think of all he has been through this past year and I can’t help but admire his courage and will to beat the odds @ such a young age.”

You are a “difference maker” because you want to be a difference maker, Peter. This is why you are so infectious and have such a following of concerned adults and young people. You’ve come this far and I can see you staring down the next obstacle. There is no “quit” in you and your group of admirers and well wishers gets larger every day.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

    Luv ya, Pete!

  12. Hello Eigner’s:
We were just checking in for the first time in a few weeks and we were caught off guard by the latest entries, however, what we have learned over the past year is how strong Peter is.

Peter – you are truely a hero in our eyes and you will overcome this too!

Ty & Erika – what an amazing boy Peter is and I know that you couldn’t be more proud of him! God works in mysterious ways – trust him for he is with all of you which I’m sure comforts you and gives you strength!
